Head Coach
ROB KOBER
Meet Rob Kober, a renowned figure in the world of freestyle skiing, whose decorated journey has moved through personal, prominent athleticism, to the helm of coaching excellence on a global stage.
Following a decades-long global coaching career at the highest levels of sport, Kober has returned to his roots, taking up the reins as Head Coach at the Apex Freestyle Club, (a program his own children once reveled in). Reflecting on the transition, Kober expressed, “I moved with my family in 1999, and we’ve been here ever since. We relocated the B.C. team that year from Whistler, because for training, you just can’t beat Apex.”
As Head Coach, Kober brings a wealth of experience, having spent 16 years coaching multiple Canadian Olympic teams from Nagano onwards. His coaching journey also includes mentoring the B.C. Freestyle Team, coaching the Chinese Olympic Freestyle Team, and guiding Canadian mogul skier, Mikael Kingsbury to his Olympic gold medal in the 2018 Pyeongchang Games, as Kingsbury’s longtime coach.
Recognizing Kober's coaching excellence, the Coaching Association of Canada honored Kober with the prestigious Jack Donohue Award. Kober, who headed Freestyle Canada’s men’s mogul team from 2002-18, emphasized adaptability and individualized coaching styles for high-performance success.
Navigating the intricacies of club-level coaching, Kober acknowledges the joy in reconnecting with various levels of club participation – from the board, to the volunteers, families, kids and athletes. As the season unfolds, he is already immersed in the dynamic responsibilities that come with the position. Reflecting on the intentionality of skiing, Kober emphasizes, "Whether they’re 10 years old or 26 years old and going for their Olympic medal, it’s still fun."
